PostPosted: Nov 24 21:41    Post subject: Jupiter-Venus conjunction Reply with quote

The early night sky (4.30pm till 6:15pm) in the south (towards bridges for most dalgety bay folk) heralds this month the conjunction (together) of two of the major planets by brightness (magnitude):

JUPITER and VENUS

just after sundown, Venus is the very bright object (brightest planet) , with Jupiter (2nd brightest planet) a handspan to the left and up from venus.

Venus is charging towards Jupiter at a finger width (1 degree) per day, and this week sees the conjection of these two on 30th Nov 2008.

So see if you can bag these two planets side-by-side, or watch if early evening is clear over the next few days how Venus progresses towards jupiter.

WARNING: as these both viewed very early in night be careful not to view sun at same time, so best wait for sundown and then they appear in next 30mins (usualy by 4:40pm they both clearly visible). Venus and Jupiter are visible to the naked eye they are so bright, but be careful with regard to the proximity of the sun.

Lets see how many can spot this pair as they near conjunction.

Huh!
All I bagged this week was lots of Strato Cumulus cum Nimbus. Thinking of starting DBAstro cloud appreciation society. Guaranteed cloud parties at most light polluted site under the great Dunfermline Nebula Smile

BWH  any sign of the Aurora?

woah is me - sent to norway - only southern part of norway where folks all went - ooo only see that in the norfff

so no!, maybe next year. Seems there are sites which state the potential of that nights viewing, and even sites which will mail you if you area go a chance, but need clear nights tooo.

i am not back early - but did go spotting 3-4 nights - never crystal clear, but did note venus/jupiter much lower.

Should be Mars bar, Milky Way, Galaxy, Milky Way Stars, Star bar . . . . surely??

Smile

Now that the conjunction approaches, we have had two cloudy nights down here, and are now under a serious deluge.  Weather forecast continues rubbish until well into next week - including Monday afternoon/evening's daylight occultation of Venus.

Ho hum.

ok looking clear tonight, and sun just setting over north queensferry. so good chance for large number to bag this conjunction....

should be 1 finger difference (at arms length) 1 degree tonight.

best luck - clear skies
