This should be a good night ! ( weather permitting )
August 12th ( a Tuesday ) is the peak for this meteor shower ( 50-100 ZHR). It`s a remnant of the comet Swift - Tuttle.
I hope to start off from the kabin car park at 2230 and head off to the exxon car park (few miles away heading towards Aberdour or maybe the silver sands car park in Aberdour) and get a good few hours of observing done. A flask/blanket would be a good idea as well as bringing binoculars or a telescope .
If anyone knows of another dark site we can go to we could discuss it when we meet up . I had hoped to do this later in the month but the perseids peak on the 12th and as its a really good event, it should`nt be missed !
As with all things above its WEATHER PERMITTING so if on the night of the 12th its raining/cloudy etc don`t turn up, we can arrange another night later in the month.
If anyone is interested please let me know or failing that see you in the kabin car park on the 12th august at 2230 leaving at 2245
CLEAR SKIES !!

Hi this sounds a great idea however I can't make it on the 12th as I am won't be here that evening.
Will glance up at the skies anyway and will keep my figures crossed for clear skies.

I'm more worried about the "new friends" we might be in danger of meeting if we turn up in some of those dark places at that time of night!
Apart from that - great idea!
Wouldn't recommend taking a telescope - too slow, unless with a video camera and a big wide-angle fish-eye lens for looking at pics later.
Better with a good high-speed swivelling Mark I eyeball!
An old-fashioned deckchair or a sun-lounger is useful though - greatly reduces the crick-in-the-neck!
Locations - the road up between Otterston Loch and Orrock Quarry, as well as the road past the quarry, have moderately dark-ish but very "big sky" panoramic views to the south-west/west, but not sure if the "view at 45-degrees from the radiant" sweep would be OK?

Hi, I hope to be there too. Don't worry about meeting strange or unfriendly people. That sort don't like witnesses! Donald. _________________ Donald |

Hope you guys get some good weather next week, and see plenty of Perseids - if anyone would like to put together a short report (up to 350 words) on the event for the next newsletter (SEABAYASTRO:BRIEF, which will replace BEGINNERS' BRIEF), then please send me a pm - I'd love to include regular reports from Dalgety Bay, going forward.
Cheers. _________________ Emma H |
