Welcome to Dalgety Bay Astronomy Club.

This is a brand new club, founded in November 2006, and it is yet to meet for the first time*. The first meeting will be arranged when there are enough members to make it worthwhile.

It hasn't been advertised widely, but a notice has been sent to the Dalgety Bay Diary for publication in the Dec 2006 - Jan 2007 issue, so hopefully there will be several ones, or even tens of recruits when that hits the doormats.

The plan is to have most of our meetings outdoors, and do some observing as we meet. Cloudy nights will force us to go indoors, probably to a pub.

One of our members, Pudsley, has been kind enough to suggest an observing site where the skies should be about as dark as can be found in a county sandwiched between Edinburgh and Dundee. It's in the Lomond Hills between Falkland Moss and  Craigmead, about 2½ miles west, and slightly south of Falkland, on the road from Falkland to Leslie. It's marked PC on this map, which means there's a lavvy, although it's quite unlikely to be open at the times that we'll be there. That said, the car park and picnic tables there will help make things hospitable, and it should be a great site to do some deep-sky observing on moonless nights.

It would be useful to have another site, closer to Dalgety Bay, for nights when we're doing planetary or lunar observing — they aren't so demanding of dark skies. We haven't pinned down such a site yet, but one idea would be the little park between Letham Gait and Chandler's Rise. Suggestions welcome.

What kind of equipment will you need? Warm clothes and a thermos have got to be top of the list, followed closely by a pair of binoculars. If you have a telescope, all the better.

As far as club organization is concerned, we'd like to try an experiment. We keep everything informal. We set subscriptions at £0.00 per annum. This means no assets, hence no bank account, no treasurer, and while we're at it, how about no committee? An amorphous cluster of people communicating through a web forum might not work in the long run, but let's not get bogged down in committees until we're sure that we need them.

Welcome to the club, during this formative stage while we bring in our first members. If you haven't registered on the forum yet, use the "Join" link at the top of the page to do that. Keep watching this forum to see how many other people have registered, and look forward to getting an e-mail when our first meeting is announced.

See you there,
The Admin.
