Getting started.Hi Folks,
I was a young teenager the last time I took an interest in Astonomy and I'm afraid that my Penguin Beginners Pocket Book of Astronomy no longer cuts the mustard!!!
Can anyone suggest some good reading material to get me up and running again?
Also as I don't own a scope or binos can anyone suggest where to find something reliable but cheap and what to look for?
Cheers,
Orphan of the Sky.

Re: Getting started.I can't recommend too highly the DK book "Universe"
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Universe-...63569-7588625?ie=UTF8&s=books by 9 authors, and edited by Martin Rees (aka Astronomer Royal, Professor Sir Martin Rees).
Also for cloudy nights, download Stellarium - it's free and very good.

PS, I bought some new binos recently, so I can lend you my old ones for a week or two. If you're coming on Thursday, I'll give you them then.
I have some homemade solar filters for them too (talk to solar b if you want to know more about our nearest star).
I also have some little pocket binos (x3 magnification), which I've temporarily mislaid, but you'd be amazed what you can see with pocket binos that you can't see with the naked eye. Pocket binos are so much easier to hold steady than big ones, too.

With the lack of a telescope. Stellarium certainly keeps me entertained for many hours. On clearer nights I'm running in circles around the garden with my notebook computer. lol

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info. I've downloaded Stellarium and I've not been off it since, it's really good!!
That's very kind of you to offer me a loan of your binos. I'm not sure if I can make it tomorrow due to my shifting shifts at work I'll know hopefully later on today!!
Regards,
Orphan of the Sky.

Hi orphan,
as far as getting started with equipment is concerned, it kind of depends on what you mean by "cheap". If you can put a number on that, I might be able to make some useful suggestions to you.
