If you came here through the Dunfermline Press, there was a slight typo in the web address they printed, and this is not actually our front page. You are, however, just one click away from it: http://dbastro.myfastforum.org.

1ST PST Image
Here's my first image taken with my new PST & DSI Colour. I managed to capture a prominence. I still need lots of practice so any advice on imaging the sun would be gratefully appreciated.

Capturing the Aurora
Heyas all, long time no speakee.

I've been silly busy with work this summer, but after going to the cinema to see Harry Potter, I saw the aurora on the way home in the middle of summer  Shocked I just about drove off the road in my surprise. It was July 21st and I live far enough North that we only get 3 hours of darkness if we're lucky at that time of year.

It wasn't very bright, and only showing the greens, but it was definately the aurora. Here's a picture though its not very clear ...
Stunning Jupiter
Well just flew back into scotland, dark at last and Jupiter in nice position

So dragged my 5inch scope out (8inch would take too long to cool) and added my x5 Teleview barlow and wow!!! stunningly clear views of jupiter, clear bands, 2 moons nearly touching the planet

Sadly the GRS (great red spot) still evades me as it behind the planet at the time....

Seems it will be in view tomorrow at 22:15 so hope for clear skies then.

Idea for an occulting disc?
Was trying to think of a way to reduce the brightness of the solar disc in my PST to make prominences etc at the limb stand out more and came up with this:

Take one of these filters (nearest I could find to plain glass):

http://www.rothervalleyoptics.co....trast-booster-1-25-inch_d499.html

Then attach to it centrally a small circle of black card / paper / insulating tape that's approximately or slightly less than the diameter of the sun's image in the eyepiece (probably some t ...
Ursa Minor
Here's an image of Ursa Minor that i captured on the night of the Perseid's. My aim was to catch a few Perseid's but was not successful. The image is made up of two 30 second exposures which where stacked. I used my Eos 400D with sigma 18-50mm lens set at f3.5. The bright star right of centre is Polaris.

Perseid photographing location
Does anyone have any suggestions for somewhere to try to get some good shots of this from? I'll need somewhere with minimal light pollution of any kind.

I'm hoping to get a shot or two like this:-
